GUESTS: the Lucerne ACADEMY Festival : December 3 2024, 7.30pm, Bockenheimer Depot
An ICCS curtain_call event (International Composer & Conductor Seminars) run by the Ensemble Modern and International Ensemble Modern Academy encouraging young composers and conductors. The ICCS is made possible by support from the Aventis Foundation.
The 2nd workshop studio concert this season is dedicated to up and coming composers, and the third visit to Happy New Ears made by members of this august institution: the Ensemble Modern celebrate the 20th Jubilee of the Lucerne Festival Academy, which was brought into being by Pierre Boulez in 2004 and has done much for composition and interpreting 20th & 21st century music. Wolfgang Rihm, who died this July, starting running it in 2016. When the Lucerne Festival Academy performed for Happy New Ears for the first time two years ago he introduced the evening, as only he could. So this concert is also a chance to look back on Wolfgang Rihm's work in Luzern and the outstanding contribution he made to contemporary music in Germany and the world.
For two weeks this summer budding composers again had the chance of discussing, further developing and playing their scores with Dieter Ammann, co-leader of the composition seminar and the Korean composer Unsuk Chin in Luzern. Made possible, as always, by IEMA. This evening will be introduced by Jagdish Mistry, a violinist with the Ensemble Modern. It is led by the young Lithuanian conductor Raimonda Skabeikaitė, who specialises in contemporary music. This year's members of the Lucerne Festival Academy come from Germany, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Korea, the USA and Chile.
