Matej Varga has been a solo double bass player in the Frankfurt Opern and Museumsorchester since 2024. He started his career in 2006 in Banska Bystrica / Slovakia, where he was taught by Robert Ragan. This was followed by time spent at renowned universities of music and studying with Božo Paradžik in Freiburg and Heinrich Braun in Munich. He performs regularly with leading orchestras and chamber groups, including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Düsseldorf Symphony and the Schumann, Casals, Galatea and Stradivari quartets. He also plays bass guitar and is at home in all kinds of music. His achievements have earned him awards including the 2016 Rotary Club Starnberg Spende, the 2013 Helmut Spehl Prize Freiburg for outstanding talented students and first prize at the Slovakia’s 2008 National String Competition.
