Domen Križaj
Baritone
The Slovenian baritone Domen Križaj studied music and medicine in Ljubljana and joined the Ensemble at Oper Frankfurt in 2020/21. During the 2024/25 season he sings the title roles in new productions of Henze's The Prince of Homburg, Magnard's Guercoeur and Verdi's Macbeth and Gorjančikov in Janáček's From the House of the Dead. Since making his debut in Frankfurt, as Albert in Werther, he has thrilled audiences with roles including Wolfram von Eschenbach and Count Almaviva in last season's new productions of Tannhäuser and Le nozze di Figaro, Rodrigo in Don Carlo, Papageno in our new Die Zauberflöte, Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte), the Count (Strauss' Capriccio) and the title role in Weill's The Tsar has his Photograph Taken. He also sang the title role in Eugene Onegin and Sharpless in a new production of Madame Butterfly for the company, a role he sang at the 2023 Bregenz Festival. Other guest engagements have included Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana) at the Festspiel Haus in Baden Barden and Rodrigo at Slovenia's National Theatre in Maribor, the Herald and title role in new productions of Lohengrin and Chausson's King Arthur at the Tirol Festival in Erl. He appeared here in recital twice, in the Holzfoyer and on the main stage, and other concert work has taken him to the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg, Balthasar Neumann Ensemble and Vienna Philharmonic. He was a member of Theater Basel's Opera Studio from 2017-2019, during which time he sang many roles including Purcell's King Arthur, Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis and Sharpless. Domen Križaj has won prizes at many competitions, including 2nd prize at the 2019 Bertelsmann Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition in Gütersloh.
