Barnaby Rea is back in Frankfurt to repeat his portrayal of the Commandant in Janáček's From the House of the Dead and sing Bijou, Blacksmith and Alcindor in our new production of Adolphe Adams’ Le Postillon de Lonjumeau. While a member of our Ensemble Barnaby Rea’s many and varied roles included the Commandant in From the House of the Dead, which he returns to sing this March, Lord Tristan Mickleford (Martha - get the CD! OehmsClassics), Adam Ochsenschwanz (Krenek’s Heavyweight or the Glory of the Nation), Truffaldin (Ariadne auf Naxos), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Baron Mirko Zeta (The Merry Widow & Soljony (Eötvös’ Tri sestry) - get both CDs! OehmsClassics, Saretzki (Eugene Onegin), Mr. Bosun (Billy Budd), Pistola (Falstaff), Bottom in Brigitte Fassbaender’s new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Sciarrone (Tosca), Konrad Nachtigall (in Johannes Erath’s new Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Hananja in Britten’s The Burning Fiery Furnace and Hobson in Peter Grimes), a role he also sang at Den Norske Opera in Oslo, at the Bergen, Edinburgh International and Enescu festivals in Bucharest at at the Royal Festival Hall in London. This British/Irish bass also sang Truffaldin at the Edinburgh International Festival, Snug (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) when he made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Poseidon in the world premiere of Evers’ Die Odyssee at Zurich Opera, Ratzekahl (Irrelohe) at the Festival d’Opéra in Lyon and Bottom for Des Moines Metro Opera. Other engagements have taken him to places including the Théâtre des Champs-Ély¬sées Paris, the Teatro Real in Madrid, Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, the Opéra de Rouen and Covent Garden in London, singing 1st Apprentice in Wozzeck. He returns regularly to English National Opera, where he started his career as a Harewood Artist, singing roles including Colline, Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Lodovico (Otello) and Nourabad (Les pêcheurs de perles). This season you can hear him there as David Riccio in Thea Musgrave’s Mary Queen of Scots. Future plans include his debuts at the Opéra de Lausanne and Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur and concert performances of Salome (1st Soldier) with the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Antonio Pappano and Britten’s Quince at the Matsumoto Festival in Japan.
