This Russian bass, who is stepping in at short notice to sing Ramphis in tonight's performance of Aida, studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow and joined the Ensemble at the Staatstheater in Karlsruhe in 1998, who bestowed the title of Kammersänger on him in 2006. He's a regular guest at leading opera houses in Europe around the world, from Tokyo, Sydney to Buenos Aires. Highlights in his international career have included Gremin in Eugene Onegin at the Vienna State Opera and Zaccaria in Nabucco at the Arena di Verona, in Venice and Tokyo. His broad and varied repertoire includes Méphistophélès (Faust), Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra), Filipo II (Don Carlo), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Banquo (Macbeth), Silva (Ernani), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Oroveso (Norma). He also sings the title roles in Boris Godunov, Attila, Don Quichotte, Don Giovanni and Mefistofele, a role for which he was nominated by critics from Opernwelt magazine for »Male Singer of the Year«. The first role in German was Hagen in Tobias Kratzer's DER FAUST Theatre Prize winning production of Götterdämmerung in Karlsruhe, which was followed by the Landgraf (Tannhäuser), King Marke (Tristan und Isolde) and Daland (Der fliegende Holländer). This versatile singer is also a passionate Lieder and concert singer.
