Andrei Popov is back in Frankfurt to repeat his wonderful portrayal of the Devil in our stunning production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Night before Christmas. He studied at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire in St Petersburg and joined the Mariinski Theater in 2007, where roles have included Truffaldino (The Love for Three Oranges), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), Mime (Rheingold and Siegfried), Nathanael and Spalanzani (The Tales of Hoffmann), Laca (Jenůfa), Agrippa von Nettelsheim (Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel), Grischka Kuterma and the title roles in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitesh and Kashchey the Immortal, which he performed in Japan under Vladimir Ashkenazy. His roles at the Mariinski this season include Sobinin in Glinka’s A Life for a Tsar, the title role in Rodion Schtschedrin’s The Left Handed Man, David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Herodes (Salome) and Tsar Berendey (Snowflake). He was awarded a Golden Mask for his portrayal of Burdiukow and Storchenko in Gogoliade. Guest engagements have taken him back to the Bolschoi in Moscow (including the Golden Cockerel directed by Kirill Serebrennikov), the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Opéra National de Lyon, De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, Finnish National Opera in Helsinki and the Edinburgh, Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg festivals. Recent engagements have included the Astrologer in Barrie Kosky’s production of The Golden Cockerel at the Aix en Provence and Adelaide festivals, Sinowi Ismailow (Lady Macbeth von Mzensk) at the Vienna State Opera and Jeroschka in Prince Igor at the Opéra National de Paris. Future plans include the Sqealer (Animal Farm) at the Vienna State Opera and Teatro Massimo in Palermo and the Regional Manager (The Nose) at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.
