Ute. M. Engelhardt was awarded the renowned Götz-Friedrich Prize for up and coming directors for her 2016 production ofThe Cunning Little Vixen at Oper Frankfurt. Now she's back with the company, where she staged Sallinen's Barabbas Dialoge, Monteverdi's L’incoronazione di Poppea and Mina - an opera written and performed by young people - in the Bockenheimer Depot (2018/19), for this new production of Dittersdorf's Doctor and Pharmacist. She's currently directing a Bernstein Trouble in Tahiti / Zemlinsky Florentine Tragedy double bill at the Pfalztheater in Kaiserslautern. Plans next season include the opening new production of the season, Carmen, at Theater Bielefeld and Eugene Onegin at the Stadttheater in Gießen. Recent productions have included Leo Blech's Alpenkönig und Menschenfeind (Alpine King & Enemy of the People), the world premiere of Anno Schreier's Wizard of Oz, Così fan tutte and Dialogues des Carmelites at Theater Aachen, Jephtha, Madama Butterfly and Handel's Orlando at the Landestheater in Detmold and Mascagni's L'amico Fritz at the Tirol Festival in Erl. Ute M. Engelhardt studied opera direction at the University for Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna, graduating in 2006 with a production of Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis, the same year she was awarded a scholarship by the Richard Wagner Foundation in Bayreuth. Earlier in her career she gained invaluable experience and inspiration working as an assistant at the Landestheater in Detmold and Oper Frankfurt, with directors including Barrie Kosky, Harry Kupfer, Christof Nel, Benedikt von Peter and Johannes Erath.
